옥타브 미라보의 소설을 토대로 한 이 영화의 배경은 1930년대 초반의 프랑스 시골 마을이다. 셀레스틴(잔 모로 분)은 파리에서 내려와, 그 지방 중류 계층의 한 가정에서 하녀로 일한다. 그런데 그 가정이라는게 괴이하기 짝이 없다. 집주인 라부르(장 오젠느 분)는 발에 집착하는 괴벽을 가지고 있고, 그의 딸 몽테일 부인(프랑수아즈 뤼갼느 분)은 대부분의 시간을 방에 틀어 박혀 알 수 없는 실험을 하며 보낸다. 거기다 그 남편인 몽테일(미셀 피콜 리 분)은 집안에서 일하는 모든 여자를 임신시키는 고약한 습관을 갖고 있다. 집안의 모든 남자들은 성적으로 "경험이 많을" 것으로 생각되는 대도시에 서 온 셀레스틴에게 관심을 갖게 되는데, 거기에는 하인인 조제프(조르주 즈레 분)도 포함된다. 조제프의 파시즘적인 견해들은 어린 소녀들에 대한 그의 건전치 못한 욕망들 만큼이나 혐오감을 불러 일으킨다. 셀레스틴은 그 의 욕망을 깨닫고, 자신의 이익을 위해 그를 조종하기 시작한다.

Celestine has a new job as a chambermaid for the quirky M. Monteil, his wife and her father. When the father dies, Celestine decides to quit her job and leave, but when a young girl is raped and murdered, Celestine believes that the Monteils' groundskeeper, Joseph, is guilty, and stays on in order to prove it. She uses her sexuality and the promise of marriage to get Joseph to confess -- but things do not go as planned.
